84 percent MLAs in Jammu and Kashmir are millionaires, AAP is the poorest and Congress is the richest; where is BJP


National Conference and Congress together crossed the majority in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. Both parties won a total of 48 seats (NC 42 and Congress 6) in the 90-member Union Territory. A new government is also going to be formed under the leadership of NC leader Omar Abdullah. The ‘Association of Democratic Reforms’ (ADR) has reported that 84 percent of the newly elected MLAs are crorepatis and their average declared assets are Rs 11.43 crore. The number of newly elected crorepati MLAs is nine percent more than in 2014. The average net worth of six Congress MLAs is a little over Rs 30 crore, while the average net worth of 29 BJP MLAs is Rs 14.55 crore.

Richest Congress MLA Tariq Hameed Karra

According to the data, the average declared assets of MLAs have more than doubled compared to a decade ago. The average declared wealth was Rs 4.56 crore a decade ago. Congress Jammu and Kashmir unit president Tariq Hameed Karra and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Rana are among the richest MLAs with assets worth over Rs 100 crore. Karra, elected from ‘Central Shalteng’ seat, has declared assets worth Rs 148 crore and is the richest MLA of Jammu and Kashmir. BJP leader Devendra Rana, who won from Nagrota constituency, is in second place with assets worth Rs 126 crore.

NC MLA Mushtaq is at third place in wealth.

According to ADR data, 76 out of 90 newly elected MLAs in Jammu and Kashmir have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore whereas in 2014 only 65 (75 per cent) out of 87 MLAs were crorepatis. Businessman and National Conference (NC) MLA from Champora Mushtaq Ahmed Guru is the third richest MLA with assets worth Rs 94 crore.

Mehraj is the poorest MLA of Aam Aadmi Party

Mehraj Malik of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is the least-wealthy MLA from Jammu and Kashmir, with total assets of just Rs 29,070. He is the first MLA of AAP in Jammu and Kashmir. In terms of lowest assets, NC MLA from Karnah Javed Ahmed Mirchal is at the second position with assets worth Rs 3 lakh and his party colleague and Kokernag MLA Zafar Ali Khatana is at the third position with assets worth Rs 34 lakh.

According to ADR data, the average net worth of six Congress MLAs is a little over Rs 30 crore, while the average net worth of 29 BJP MLAs is Rs 14.55 crore. The average assets of 42 NC MLAs is Rs 8.47 crore, the average assets of three PDP members is Rs 4.25 crore and the average assets of seven independent MLAs is around Rs 5 crore. 88 percent (37) of NC MLAs are crorepatis, while 86 percent (25) of BJP MLAs have assets in crores.

Assets of 23 MLAs cross Rs 10 crore

All six Congress MLAs, the lone Communist Party of India-Marxist MLA and the lone People’s Conference MLA have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore. According to the data, 23 MLAs have assets of more than Rs 10 crore, while 26 MLAs have assets of more than Rs 5 crore but less than Rs 10 crore. According to ADR data, maximum 27 MLAs fall in the range of Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore, while 14 MLAs have assets less than Rs 1 crore.
