Mumbai,
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has said that the mega auction for IPL 2025 will be held in late November or early December. The BCCI has held two big auctions in the last decade, with a gap of four years between them. The first mega auction was held in 2014 while the second in 2018, at which time Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings made a comeback after their two-year suspension.
According to a report, the date of the IPL 2025 mega auction has been confirmed. However, the rules and regulations of the auction have not been announced yet. The 2021 mega auction was postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The teams then extended their players’ contracts by a year during this period. Like the previous mega auction held in 2022, the upcoming auction will also be a two-day affair. In 2022, teams were allowed to retain a maximum of four players. However, with the end of the three-year cycle, there is also confusion about the number of players retained among various franchises. Some teams are seeking to retain a maximum of eight players, while others are in favor of retaining four or five players.
RTM option likely to be available
The mega auction held in 2022 was held in February. At the same time, the mini auction held before the 2023 and 2024 seasons was held in December. The mega auction lasts for two days and the same is likely this time as well. In the last mega auction held in 2022, teams were allowed to retain a maximum of four players. This time there is no consensus among the franchises on retaining the players. In 2018, the franchise also had the option of Right to Match i.e. RTM. In this, the franchise could add its released player sold in the auction by paying the same amount after the sale. This time too, the franchise is likely to have the option of RTM.
