India on Sunday sent essential relief material to Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam under Operation Sadbhavna to help them deal with the impact of a major typhoon Yagi. Various parts of these countries are reeling under severe floods due to typhoon Yagi. According to reports, the winds caused by typhoon ‘Yagi’ were very strong. The rain caused by it engulfed the entire region. Despite all the security arrangements and preparations, the storm has badly disrupted normal life.
The storm hit the South China Sea a week before it triggered landslides that killed over 170 people in Vietnam and nearly 40 in Myanmar.The Ministry of External Affairs said “Operation Sadbhav” is part of a broader effort to contribute to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in the ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) region in line with India’s “Act East” policy. India has sent humanitarian relief assistance of US $ 1 million to Vietnam and US $ 100,000 to Laos.
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar posted on social media platform X and wrote that India has launched “Operation Sadbhavna”. India is sending aid to Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos to show its solidarity with the people affected by Typhoon Yagi. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said that 10 tonnes of relief material including ration, clothes and medicines have been sent to Myanmar by naval ship INS Satpura. An Air Force military cargo plane is going to Vietnam with 35 tonnes of relief material and Laos with 10 tonnes of relief material.
Essential relief material sent to every country
10 tonnes of aid including dry rations, clothes and medicines were today sent to Myanmar by Indian Naval Ship INS Satpura, while an Indian Air Force aircraft is carrying 35 tonnes of aid for Vietnam which includes water purification materials, water containers, blankets, kitchen utensils, solar lanterns. 10 tonnes of aid is being sent to Laos which includes gensets, water purification materials, hygiene materials, mosquito nets, blankets and sleeping bags.
Many people lost their lives, hundreds are still missing
Myanmar’s state TV said on Saturday that the death toll in floods and landslides caused by Yagi has reached at least 74, while 89 people are missing. Myanmar faces such a situation almost every year during the monsoon. Cyclone Nargis of 2008 caused terrible devastation in Myanmar. 1.38 lakh people lost their lives in it. According to reports from Vietnam, the death toll after Typhoon Yagi rose to 233 on Friday, as rescue workers recovered more bodies from areas affected by landslides and floods.
